Nonprofit organization We Are Moving The Needle has created a scholarship fund in honor of electronic music innovator SOPHIE.

Created in collaboration with SOPHIE’s family, the SOPHIE Scholarship Fund provides meaningful support to women, trans, and non-binary students in the US who are pursuing degrees in music production, audio engineering, and other related fields, with a goal of closing the gender gap in the recording industry. Awards are given to successful applicants at the $5,000 or $10,000 level, and the deadline to apply is April 27th.

On the Instagram account run by the late artist’s family, a post caption read: “We are proud to announce this scholarship fund in SOPHIE’s name. SOPHIE was passionate about the future of music, and, just like she did, we can’t wait to see many more women, trans and non-binary creators change the game.”

Born on September 17th, 1986 in Northampton, England, SOPHIE was a British songwriter, producer, and DJ who was known for her maximalist sound design experimentations that incorporated elements of pop and underground electronic music styles. Her idiosyncratic sonic textures helped lay the foundation for hyperpop, a microgenre and movement in which she’s widely considered a pioneer. SOPHIE died on January 30th, 2021, after a tragic accident where she fell from a three-story rooftop while climbing up to watch the full moon.

Interested students can see the eligibility requirements and apply for the SOPHIE Scholarship Fund on We Are Moving The Needle.
