Several crews in the Bay Area have banded together to raise a strike fund for artists who’ve turned down offers to perform at an upcoming Boiler Room event in San Francisco.
On June 6th in Oakland, NO BIAS, Amor Digital, Program SF, Fake and Gay Inc., and Lower Grand Radio will host the Bay Area Solidarity Strike (BASS), a party dedicated to collecting the necessary means to compensate artists who’ve lost compensation due to the boycott.
“The BASS Fund is a financial resource that will ensure that artists boycotting Boiler Room (in response to its recent acquisition by KKR, a private equity and investment firm with continued investment in Israeli tech and data firms as well as connections to weapons manufacturers and defense contractors) is a viable option regardless of financial need,” the event description explains. “Through mutual aid, our community can make a material impact and ensure that withdrawal of labor is sustainable for Bay Area arts workers.”
Earlier this year, it was announced that DICE sold Boiler Room to Superstruct Entertainment, a European events giant which was acquired by investment firm KKR last year. The latter was found to have a history of backing data centers in Isreal and the US military industrial sector, pouring millions to billions of dollars in the fields for at least ten years. Artists have since started to withdraw and refuse offers from Boiler Room in support of Palestine.
