A crowdfund has been launched for DJ Funk (real name Charles Chambers), a Chicago artist who pioneered ghetto house.
Organized by his family, the GoFundMe aims to raise money to cover funeral arrangements. The page’s description states DJ Funk has been battling stage four cancer and “doesn’t have much longer left.” At the time of writing, $10,063 of its $16,000 goal as been met.
DJ Funk debuted on local legacy label Dance Mania in 1993 with his House The Groove EP. Songs like “Work It” and “Pump It” have been recognized for creating the blueprint for ghetto house, a raunchy subgenre that sprung from Chicago house.
