Nearly ten years of The Era knowing they’re on top.
Last year, I raved about how much I loved The Era Footwork Crew’s “Who Betta,” a single from their COMBO PACK EP which stuck to the the top of my best of the year list. I was pleased to hear the collective’s latest EP, Let the Record Reflect, kept the same flashy tone because I truly believe they’re doing something special. It got me wondering, Have The Era always been this confident? I looked back and found the group’s first release, In The Wurkz FM, and am pleased to confirm: Yes, they have.
Let the Record Reflect made up of four tracks that showcase The Era Footwork Crew’s unique craft of infusing rap and footwork in a way that’s authentically them — Litebulb, Chief Manny, Steelo, and PTop (with the production genius of DJ Spinn) write the songs, perform them, and choreograph dances to go along. This time, they tap Bellamy Banks for a hook and Teklife’s DJ Lucky as well as Sterls, Mvte, and Gzus Piece for versus that co-sign the crew’s positive self-convictions.
While The Era might have always had that innate aplomb, this EP proves how comfortable they are to show they’re doing something different. Where their sound usually veers closer to quintessential footwork, in this project, DJ Spinn — along with his various collaborators — infuse so many different styles. Blending footwork with everything from Latin jazz to trap to drill, Let the Record Reflect solidifies nobody is doing it like The Era Footwork Crew.
