When it comes to artist-run labels, Sam Binga’s Pineapple Records represents him perfectly: It’s high-energy, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and you know you can always rely on it for a good time. For the Bristol producer’s latest release, he teams up with London’s Fracture for two tracks that are sure to become staples for any club DJ.
“I thought you’d like the other one more,” Sam Binga told me after I played “Trippin’” on The Lot Radio last month. It wasn’t an unfair hypothesis—the speedier track of the two is brings a emphatic Jersey club bounce that blends into booming jungle breaks halfway through (I thought only New Jeans was allowed to do that!). It’s reminiscent of DJ Sliink’s modern club classic, “Football Anthem”—galvanizing brass horns are used as the driver for the song’s beat, urging any listener to get up and dance. “Trippin’” mixes jungle more subtly, paving faint breakbeats beneath pinging electro synths that transform into echoing vocal chops.
The dynamics between Sam Binga and Fracture make for a really playful combination. With each song featuring parts that are contrastingly cute and combative, “I Jus Wanna/Trippin’” is an A/B-sided single that can fit practically any vibe you’re trying to create—it’s sexy, fun, fun, hard and tough all at the same time. They also make for perfect club tools—the songs’ simple structures make it easy to speed up or slow down and layer between any tracks but the shifting elements are sure to give any set more kick.
